ServiceMaster Restoration Services handles water and sewage cleanup, fire and smoke restoration, mold remediation, biohazard cleanup and cleaning for Darien homes and businesses, 24/7. The most useful local fact: after the July 4, 2026 storms, the City of Darien estimated about 35 homes had sanitary sewer backups, and a reimbursement program for overhead sewers followed.
In a heavy storm, groundwater can seep into sanitary sewers through cracked or root-damaged laterals, and storm water reaches them through improper connections. When a main receives more than it can carry, the Insurance Information Institute explains, sewage can push back out through basement floor drains and other low-lying openings. A City of Darien committee memo from August 2026 notes that DuPage County owns and maintains the sanitary sewer system for most of the city, and that roughly 35 homes backed up during the July 4 storms.
Ownership gets confusing. According to the city's sewer information page, Darien Municipal Services maintains the storm sewers, while three different agencies serve the sanitary side: DuPage County, the Downers Grove Sanitary District and a Hinsdale-based district. The pipe from the curb to your house is the homeowner's responsibility, so the city suggests calling first to see whether a blockage starts in public sewers.
An overhead sewer replaces a home's gravity sewer connection with an overhead configuration, which helps protect the house from future sanitary backups. Under the expanded program announced in August 2026, DuPage County reimburses the first $2,000 of a homeowner's paid installation cost, then 50% of the remaining eligible cost up to a county maximum of $7,500. The city adds up to $5,000 more, for a combined maximum of $12,500. The program does not cover restoration or remodeling, and residents are asked to contact the county before starting work.

Drywall, carpet and pad soaked by sewage are usually removed rather than dried in place, and hard surfaces are cleaned and disinfected. Our guide to sewage backup cleanup and Category 3 water explains why.
Usually not by a standard policy. The Insurance Information Institute says sewer backups are not covered under a typical homeowners policy or by flood insurance, and that the coverage is bought separately or as an endorsement, usually at a modest cost. Endorsement limits vary widely, so check yours before storm season rather than after.
Darien has 8,950 housing units, with a median year built of 1978 in the American Community Survey. More homes went up in the 1970s than in any other decade.

In all, 55.0% of the housing stock predates 1980. Homes from the 1960s and 1970s are now old enough that original clay or cast-iron sewer laterals, where they remain, may have cracked joints or root intrusion, both of which can contribute to backups. Darien also has a large share of attached and multi-unit housing: 5,420 of its units are single-family detached, and 1,854 are renter-occupied.
Pre-1978 homes bring two more checks. EPA's RRP rule requires lead-safe certified practices when paid work disturbs paint in those homes, and EPA lists vinyl floor tile and its adhesives among materials that may contain asbestos. Basement floors are often where backup water sits longest, so old tile is tested before it is pulled.

Split-level and raised-ranch designs common in that era often put a family room, laundry and a bathroom on the lowest level, close to the floor drain. That is convenient day to day and costly when a main surcharges, which is one reason overhead sewers and backwater valves draw interest here.
Much of Darien drains to Sawmill Creek, a Des Plaines River tributary. The Village of Willowbrook's summary of the county watershed plan says about 41.7% of the Sawmill Creek watershed lies within Darien, and DuPage County has an updated Sawmill Creek watershed plan in progress, along with plans covering Wards Creek and Prentiss Creek. The National Weather Service notes that heavy thunderstorm rain can cause flash flooding, and storms like those on July 4 are when backups tend to happen.

Not under a typical policy. The Insurance Information Institute says sewer backups are excluded from standard homeowners policies and are not covered by flood insurance either; you need a separate product or a backup endorsement, usually for a modest premium. Policies vary, so read your declarations page or ask your agent, and contact the Illinois Department of Insurance with questions.

According to the City of Darien, sewers from the curb to the home are the homeowner's responsibility, and sewers in the street belong to the city, township or county. If you have a backup, the city suggests calling to check whether the blockage starts in public sewers; if it is between the curb and the house, a plumber is the next call.
It depends on your address. The City of Darien maintains storm sewers, while sanitary sewers are served by three agencies: DuPage County, the Downers Grove Sanitary District and a Hinsdale-based district. An August 2026 city memo notes that DuPage County owns and maintains the sanitary system for most of Darien. The city's sewer information page lists contact numbers for each.
Small amounts on bare concrete can sometimes be handled with gloves, boots, eye protection and disinfectant, but sewage-soaked drywall, carpet and pad are generally removed rather than dried. If the backup covers finished space, involves children or anyone with health concerns, or keeps coming back, professional cleanup is the safer choice, and your insurer may want it documented.
